The Myth of Pokemon
Could there be a better way to understand a myth other than making one? Maybe, but creating a myth allows for students to do more than write one. There is a lot of thought that has to go into the creation because there are a lot of elements that you need to include.
My myth was about the creation of Pokemon, how its original intention was to provide tarot readings for the emperors and their families. The creatures of pokemon were the original beings that roamed the lands of Japan. The Pokéseer were the ones who connected with the creatures even after they were long gone from the earth, and gave them meanings. If I am being honest, creating a myth allowed me to have a new found respect for myths. The history behind a lot of it could be seen as unrealistic, yet they help explain so many phenomena that one can find and connect with throughout their lives. On top of that, the hidden meaning behind the myth is what makes myths so universal and reflective. They also serve as a way to explain the unknown or give meaning to something you can’t really explain.
In regard to teaching myths, I think it allows students to view myths with more complexity. It’s also meant to explain how myths shape the way cultures think and function. Not only that, but it allows them to understand a community's values, history, and identity through a myth. Creating a myth allows for students and teachers to identify those elements within their own lives.

Hi Keiry! I love your honesty in sharing your experience on the two different assignments and how the universal meaning of myths ties them together. It is definitely important that when students study myths that they not only understand the myth itself and its meaning but also the culture around it and what the myth shows about its cultural origin. Even when I read other people's myths I can sense their personality and their interests through their writing and what they wrote about! I can definitely see how students can use the opportunity of studying a myth or creating one as a way to reflect on what is important in their own lives or what they are passionate about in their lived depending on their myth and their interpretations of other myths. It's amazing how in your myth you took the modern concept of Pokemon cards and made it connect to history and Japanese culture.
